Two
photos
show
the
first
vehicle
, a
red
Chevrolet
panel
van
which
is
referenced
in the
letter
by
Howard
Patterson
.
Shown
inside
the
panel
van
is
Marie
Kunze
.
Miss
Kunze
graduated
from
Iowa
State
Teachers
College
(now
University
of
Northern
Iowa)
in
June
of
1951
and was
hired
as the
Jasper
County
Librarian
beginning
July
of that
year
. In a
later
resume
she
described
her
duties
like
this:
Organized
the
library
with
book
drops
to
all
rural
schools
and
smaller
communities
in the
county
.
Later
helped
secure
first
bookmobile
and
weed
most
of the
high
school
collections
and
make
recommendations
for their
improvement
.
Three
more
8”
x
10”’s
show
the
second
,
larger
bookmobile
making
a
stop
at
Mound
Prairie
.
Several
children
are
pictured
getting
on the
vehicle
labeled
Jasper
County
Library
Traveling
Branch
,
checking
out
books
, and
waving
good-bye
. Also
pictured
are
Miss
Kunze
and
Howard
Patterson
,
driver
.
Another
photo
of the
same
bookmobile
show
Miss
Kunze
with a
new
assistant
from
Sweden
,
Greta
Reborg
.
Miss
Kunze
resigned
in
1954
to
start
a
family
. The
four
smaller
photos
were
included
with a
letter
from
Mr
.
Patterson
to
Miss
Kunze
some
years
later
in
1965
where
Mr
.
Patterson
shows
off
the
newest
version
of the
bookmobile
he
drove
back
from
Wooster
,
Ohio
in
1965
. He
describes
it
as
having
“…a
extra
L.P
.
gas
engine
turning
over
a
220
generator
for
air
conditioning
,
heat
under
the
floor
,
lights
, and
outlets
everywhere
.
Weighs
10
tons.”
He
goes
on to
say
“…has
everything
,
power
steering
,
hydraulic
brakes
,
clutch
,
five
forwards.”
It
went
into
operation
on
March
1st
,
1965.”
